Since 1920s, many highly qualified and skillful Russian musicians came to Harbin. They contributed a lot to the foundation of the Harbin Musical City. Among them, the Jewish Musicians played major roles.

In May, 1921, the first musical school was founded in Harbin. It was first located at the Railroad Business School of Nangang District. In 1928, the staff moved to the Oksacovskaya Middle School and in 1941, they again moved to the Datong Road (now Xinyang Road) in Daoli District. Later the location was changed to be the Business Club (now the city Science Palace). Most of the members of the school art committee were Jewish musicians.

V.D.Trakhtinberg, the famous violinist, was born in Kiev in 1884. He graduated from Kiev Musical School in 1908. Later he entered the Peterborn Musical School to study playing violin with the instruction of Master All and graduated there in 1912. After the Russian October Revolution, he came to Harbin and became chairman of the Art Committee in the First Muscial School. The stringed musical quartat in which he was the major violinist was well-known in China and abroad. In the 1930s', he was the chief violinist and the commander of the Harbin symphony orchestra. In 1947, He was appointed as the headmaster of the Harbin-Russian Advanced Musical School. Many of his students are also very famous: the genius Tolia Kamencki became famous in America later; Hellmut Stern established the German chamber music orchestra. He nurtured many musical personnels for the new China. In 1950s', he immigrated to Austria and passed away in 1963.
